BIO

Catherine received a BA in visual art in 1985 from Sydney College of Fine Art and a Diploma in Theater Art from East Sydney Technical College in 1990. She began choreographing in 1990 in Sydney Australia working primarily on solos that combined original music, visuals and dance. In 1994 Catherine was contracted by The Performance Space, Sydney to make a full evening work. She directed and performed in Neverness, a collaboration with filmmaker James Whitington and composer Gary Bradbury. Neverness received notices from the Sydney Morning Herald and Dance Australia. Catherine showed Neverness in Berlin at Tacheles Theater in 1996 and the piece was remounted in 1999 at Context Theater in New York City.

Since arriving in New York City in 1996 Catherine trained for seven years in Klein technique with Susan Klein and Barbara Mahler. She has performed with a variety of choreographers and performance artists including, Maureen Fleming, Penny Arcade, Julie Atlas Muz and Stanley Love. Catherine and her company Tilt Performance have presented work at The Field's Performance Zone festival, the Performance Mix series, the Mulberry St. Theater's New Steps series, Chashama's Deli Dances and Oasis festivals and the Dance Now festival, to name a few. Catherine choreographed multiple public performances in Chashama's window space at Times Square and co-organized and performed in Autumn Dances the first performance event at La Plaza Cultural Garden. She co-curated Pixel Shutter Eye with Koosil'ja Hawing at Context Studios and premiered Liquid Skin at the event. In 2004 Catherine and Tilt Performance Co presented Torn at Judson Church for April Showers, Instrument at, PS122 for Avant Garde-O-Rama, The Art of Falling at HERE for the American Living Room festival and All of Me at Dixon Place for the Body Blend series. Catherine was accepted by Dance Theater Workshop to participate in the Bessie Schonberg Laboratory for experienced choreographers. She made Touch and showed the piece at Dance Theater Workshop in May 2005. Tilt Performance also presented work in the Lower Westside Film Festival, the 2005 HOWL festival and produced an evening at Galapagos Art Space. Tilt Performance presented a shared evening of work at the 2006 American Living Room festival. Catherine was recently awarded a Swing Space grant from the Lower Manhattan Cultural Council. She will collaborate with filmmaker Pam Kray to create The Art of falling II, a multi-media performance installation about the artists’ response to life in New York City to be presented in Spring 2007.
